According to the 20th Century philosopher Henri Bergson, pure memory or remembrance is in the past and separated from the body. In this strategy, the house becomes a portal between the underlying and the overlying spaces. New spaces are created by keeping in mind the threats and needs of the time. Altogether with the fascination in the process of casting which create a physical imprint of an object, the proposal is to create a protection for the historic houses and people who live there and at the same time, creating the traces of the houses which later in the future will serve as a memory place holder to the past.
The "Memory Trace" proposal aims to protect the memory of the Point neighborhood and introduce the possible way of living with the changing conditions of environment that surrounds it. A concrete like material will be casted around the houses, protect them from the rising sea-level. As the water rises, more layers of concrete will be added above previous layers except for the window panels area which will be covered with acrylic glass to allow natural light to enter interior space of the houses. The chimney will be used as a wind tunnel to improve natural ventilation within the house once some of the windows are sealed by the casting process. To provide public space and to be able to utilize the space between houses within the blocks, the retaining walls will be added between each house, creating a courtyard which allow people to communicate. Also, the urban grid of the existing streets will be preserved along the process as well, as the blocks are being casted around, the grid characteristic remains.
In the future, the houses will be relocated into more suitable location and reveal traces of negative space casted on the concrete. The proposal open to the possibility of different typology of architecture which can be built above, the trace of the houses become the threshold between the new and the existing open space below.
