The concept of GREY | GREEN | BLUE revolves around the idea to maintain the historic fabric of Point Neighbourhood by retaining the traditional houses and evolving its surroundings to account for climatic change. We have adopted a two-sided approach to solve the problem - 1) Relieve the neighbourhood by constant flooding caused due to storm surge & sea level rise 2) Attack the root of the problem, (i.e. Global warming) by attempting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions generated by the locals. The main objectives are to protect and preserve the essence of the neighborhood and to enhance the sense of community to increase the quality of life.
The essential idea in this project is to introduce gradual changes in the neighborhood by converting existing street infrastructure (Grey zones) into more permeable soft capes (Green belts) and introducing water pockets at crossovers to allow for an increase in the water holding capacity of the streets. The Green belts on the streets will hold recreational facilities such as cycling and pedestrian tracks, plantations and community spaces. Subsequently, the green zones/streets will gradually be turned into water canals (Blue Streets) to maximize the fresh water holding capacity of the neighbourhood. In addition, the backyards of all houses will be converted into wetlands with shared community zones, thereby increasing the surface porosity. The design incorporates a dike along the shoreline to prevent flooding caused due to sea level rise as well as create recreational spaces along the water’s edge.
The concept relies on going back to the origins of Newport by “reviving the cove”, adapting to a natural, healthier lifestyle and reconstructing its image as a “Port City” to create an extraordinary experience between the past and the future.
